The four letter word Rape has become a common affair in our country, that whenever news about some girl getting molested breaks, nobody is awestruck. Over the years, we, as a people, have become so accustomed with it, that it has become just yet another piece of news worthy of being skipped. The first thought that fleets into one’s mind is compassion for the victim, and the close second thought is that, the girl in question would have done something to invite the rape.
Over the years, people have come up with various reasons and justifications for the ever-increasing number of cases that have been filed under rape. Many of the sanctimonious hypocrites claim that women dress up provocatively, and thereby they get raped. What a deranged statement, this!
Such a chauvinistic society, that we’ve got here that, men aren’t able to come to terms with the independent 21st century woman who can very well take care of herself.
So, by tainting her morals, he can bring relief to his ego. It is not just the case with men, but many women out there who missed the bus from the 19th century who blame the victim for their plight. So does that mean women have to veil up so that she doesn’t tempt anyone? And men don’t have to hold their horses? This is gender apartheid.
Aren’t the men folk bringing shame upon themselves for being portrayed as having no control over their animal instincts?
“She had loose morals, She goes to parties, She wears skimpy outfits, and She indulges in debauchery (read, live in relationship). She brings disgrace to our Indian culture”. Such statements are utterly preachy and judgmental. The attitude simply detracts from the real issue, and focuses on matters of trivial importance.
Just last month, we all came to know of the appalling incident where a three and a half year old was raped by her father – a French Diplomat. Is the baby girl to be blamed here? Was she inviting rape? This monstrous pedophile of a father definitely needs to be hanged, drawn and quartered.
There is a myth going on that, in the olden days, the number of rape cases were much less than what it is now.
This is a big fallacy. It’s not that all of a sudden that men transformed into demons, but in those times, nobody really had the spine to come out public about this issue. So the count of reported cases was few.
Women need to be more strong willed and should realize that even if such a calamity has fallen upon them, they need to take it in their stride and get justice.
There is no magic pill to put an end to this atrocity. But mothers out there just ask themselves this question – All of you do tell your daughters to stay safe from these men, but how many of you tell your sons not to rape?
To counter the attacks on women, they themselves should try and mould a world where a man’s worth is measured not by the money he makes, but his attitude for his fellow beings, be it woman or man.
